Cloud 9 is the name of a popular bath salt that can serious health complications when used. This hallucinogen and stimulant is usually sold illegal disguised as another product.

Recently, bath salts have been making headlines in conjunction with all of the tragic cannibal attacks that have taken place around the country. These synthetic drugs have flown, largely, under the radar until now, and have sparked a national debate as to why they are even allowed to be sold. In reality, the manufacturers of these bath salts, such as Cloud 9, are cleverly able to skirt regulation by the Federal Drug Administration by labeling their products as “not safe for human consumption.” Still, this has not stopped gas stations and convenience stores around the country from stocking these drugs right next to cigars, rolling papers, and “water pipes.”

Awareness of the dangers posed by bath salts is increasing. If you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction to drugs like bath salts, have them seek immediate medical attention.

Side Effects

Cloud 9 produces feelings of euphoria, stimulation, an enhanced appreciation for music, an elevated mood, decreased hostility, improved mental function and mild sexual stimulation; these effects are similar to the effects of cocaine, amphetamines and MDMA. These effects last different amounts of time, depending on the way the drug is taken. When taken orally, users report they can feel the effects within 15–45 minutes, when snorted the effects are felt within minutes. The effects last between two and three hours when taken orally or nasally, but only half an hour if taken intravenously. If taken in high doses it causes hallucinations and the effects can last for up to 5-6 days. All in all, it is very dangerous, and there are now many bath salts that are made up of a different active ingredient, MDPV. Some common side effects of Cloud 9 include:

  • Hallucinations that can last 5-6 days
  • Agitation, paranoia, hallucinations
  • Chestpain
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Increased blood pressure and pulse
  • Psychotic behavior that is uncontrollable

Long term effects are still being studied due to the newness of bath salts.
