Treatment in Colorado

For a state that is concerned about health and well-being, Colorado has a high rate of alcohol and drug abuse when compared to national averages.  According to the 2009 statistics, 50,198 individuals entered addiction treatment for alcohol as a primary substance of abuse with an additional 17,125 people who were admitted for alcohol abuse combined with a secondary drug.

Besides alcohol, cocaine, heroin, meth, prescription pills and marijuana are the most frequently abused drugs in Colorado.  Colorado even more recently made history by controversially adding Amendment 64 to Colorado’s state constitution in 2012, which makes legal the personal use, possession and limited home-growing of marijuana under Colorado law for adults aged 21 and older.

Another concern in Colorado is the prescription pill abuse, with deaths linked to opioids doubling in 10 years.  Current data indicates the hydrocodone products such as Vicodin, oxycodone products such as OxyContin, Benzodiazepines such as Xanax and Valium, Methadone, MS Contin, Darvon and Darvocet are the most commonly abused and diverted pharmaceuticals in Colorado.

There are several rehabilitation programs in the State of Colorado which provide services for addicted adults and adolescents dealing with heroin, cocaine, club drugs, methamphetamine and prescription drug addiction.  Before enrolling in any program, make sure the center offers a medial detox. Whenever an addict starts the process of getting rid of his or her addiction, withdrawal symptoms usually occur. A medical detox will cleanse the body of its substance dependency prior to rehabiliation.  Knowing the treatment service offered by a rehab center is important because this can cause a significant difference in the person’s addiction treatment and the effectiveness of the treatment in addition to time and cost. It is important to discuss all aspects of a treatment program with the staff at the rehab center.
